Last week I met up with Olivia and Scott for a relaxed sunset engagement shoot at Otley Surprise View – one of the most scenic spots in Yorkshire. This shoot was all about keeping things natural and pressure-free, helping them feel comfortable in front of the camera before their big day.
Starting Off at The Royalty Pub
We began the evening at The Royalty pub, which is just a short walk from the ridge. It’s a great place to meet, chat, and ease into the session – especially if you’re a bit camera shy. I took the opportunity to ask Olivia and Scott a few questions about their wedding plans and the kind of photos they were hoping for. It’s a really valuable part of the process – understanding what matters to each couple and getting to know how they interact together.
I’ll be photographing their wedding at The Queens Hotel in Leeds shortly – a completely different setting but just as full of character. I can’t wait to see how the story continues.
Golden Hour at Otley Surprise View
As we headed up onto the ridge, the light started to drop and golden hour kicked in – that soft, cinematic light that makes everything feel extra romantic. Otley Surprise View offers stunning panoramic views over the Wharfe Valley, and it made the perfect backdrop for this Yorkshire engagement shoot.
Rather than giving lots of posing direction, I let Olivia and Scott move naturally together, offering gentle prompts only when needed. It was a chance for them to get used to how I work, and for me to see what felt natural for them. These sessions are never about forced smiles or awkward poses – they’re about capturing something real.
