Creating Visual Stories Through Campaign Photography
Collaborating with brands to create imagery that tells a story is always a rewarding challenge. A little while ago I worked with Pink Lady Apples and renowned menopause nutritionist Emma Bardwell on a campaign highlighting the benefits of eating apples, particularly during menopause. My role was to provide portrait photographs that would complement an article and video exploring the impact of sensory changes on diet during this life stage.
The Importance of a Relatable Setting
The campaign’s theme centred around natural, wholesome eating, so we hired a property through Life Style Locations as our shoot location, selecting a stunning open kitchen / diner in Moortown / Chapel Allerton. The kitchen setting not only created a warm, relatable backdrop but also reinforced the message of health and lifestyle that the campaign aimed to convey. It was important to create an environment that felt authentic and approachable, aligning perfectly with Pink Lady’s brand values.
Using a Portable Studio for Professional Campaign Photography
To ensure the shoot ran smoothly, I brought along my portable studio. This includes professional lighting equipment, my camera, and a tethered laptop, allowing clients to view images instantly on a large screen. This setup proved invaluable for real-time feedback, ensuring every shot met the campaign’s vision. The combination of the thoughtfully selected location and my versatile studio equipment allowed me to capture a collection of portraits and lifestyle images that balanced aesthetic appeal with storytelling.
A Focus on Storytelling Through Imagery
For this shoot, my focus was on capturing Emma’s expertise and warmth while seamlessly incorporating Pink Lady apples into the visuals. Each image was carefully composed to highlight both the subject and the product, ensuring they worked cohesively across the campaign’s various platforms.
Conclusion
This project is an excellent example of how thoughtful planning, a strong collaboration, and the right tools can create impactful imagery. If you’d like to see how I’ve applied these principles in other projects, take a look at some of my other commercial photography work or my article on product photography with a portable studio.
